Ethanol can be broken down by two pathways. One is mediated by an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase which yields a reactive molecule called acetaldehyde. The other pathway is mediated by an enzyme called cytochrome P450 2E1 which generates a dimer of oxygen with a negative charged molecule called reactive oxygen species (ROS) and acetaldehyde. These molecules don't have much of an effect in low concentrations but reach excessive levels when ethanol is consumed. In order to detoxify these molecules the body has to be stimulated to generate molecules that counteract their toxicty. One molecule that is key to the detoxification process is glutathione. Glutathione is produced by stimulated cells and detoxifies ROS which results in the conversion into an inert molecule.Hang-Zen is formulated to stimulate the body's natural induction of glutathione by a pathway called NRF2. Glutathione cannot be provided directly as a supplement since it becomes oxidized when ingested so it is important to stimulate glutathione production directly in cells.
